St. Isidore’s Garden – Summer 2020

When the old Central Catholic High School was demolished in 2008, it created green space that SVdP-HT used to plant four side by side gardens, each 20 feet wide by 95 feet long, which we named in honor of St. Isidore.  The first year we planted radishes and onions.  Starting the second year, and every year after, we gradually added tomatoes, green beans, potatoes, peas, sweet potatoes and summer vegetables.  Richard and Annette Foley, long-time Holy Trinity parishioners, served as the guiding force for the garden, from first planting to the very last harvest.

We planted our favorite crops and have added pepper varieties of hot peppers, cucumbers, okra, zucchini, summer squash and winter squash. In our raised beds we grow Swiss chard, kale, and beets. When our green beans did not produce (due to weather) we replaced them with turnip seeds for fall turnip greens and collard greens.

We miss our garden when it rests during winter — although spring is never far away!  We are already thinking about what we would like to plant and are asking our food pantry’s attendees which vegetables they would most like to receive on a recently picked basis.
